The JCC in Manhattan has been a strong and dynamic force on the Upper West Side since its inception in 1990. With the opening of The Samuel Priest Rose Building in January of 2002, the JCC has grown exponentially, currently hosting over 1,200 programs each season. Activities at the JCC range from fitness to senior book clubs to creative arts to Jewish learning and everything in between, serving over 55,000 people annually.
Even more than a community center, the JCC is a second home—a place where people come to connect to others, learn new skills, find inspiration, and experience life's celebrations and challenges. The JCC's mission of improving the quality of life in our neighborhood and our city is realized each and every day through our programs, partnerships, and dedicated staff.
When The Samuel Priest Rose Building opened on Amsterdam Avenue six years ago as home to The JCC in Manhattan, the staff and Board of Directors realized that there was an underrepresented population in the community: young Jews from the former Sovet Union. To address this need, the JCC reated a handful of programs designed to engage this population in American-Jewish life. Two-and-a-half years ago with the support of the UJA-Federation of New York, the JCC officially launched, Generation R, a program area for Russian-speaking Jews in their 20's, 30's ,and 40's. Generation R's main objective is to present opportunities for these Russian-speaking Jews to become leaders in the Jewish community, and to that end, Generation R is spearheaded by a dynamic and active leadership council. To date, Generation R serves hundreds of individuals and families each year through activities that range from Shabbat dinners and Jewish holiday celebrates to Russian-Israeli films, Russian-Jewish theater, community service projects, and more.
